빌리 조엘의 본명은 윌리엄 마티 조엘로서,

어머니는 뮤지컬 가수 었고, 엔지니어인 그의 아버지 또한

피아노 솜씨가 프로급이었기 때문에 부모로부터 그는 이미 뛰어난

음악성을 물려받고 있었다. 빌리 조엘은 어느날 그의 누나가 듣고 있는

엘비스 프레슬리의 레코드를 듣고부터 점차 로큰롤에 관심을 갖기 시작했고,

비틀즈의 출현으로 록의 길로 가게 되었다.

 

1971년 솔로로 데뷔한 그느 첫앨범 [Cold Spring Harbor] 를 발매했으나

실패하며 소속사와의 법정분쟁으로 어려움을 겪기도 한다.

초기의 실패 이후 1973년 "Piano Man"의 출반과 함께 대히트로 재기에

성공한 그는 1977년 [THe Stranger] 앨범으로 빅히트를 기록했으며,

1978년에 플래티넘을 수상한다.
