Dream of the Drowned Submariner / Mark Knopfler

 

 

 

 

1949년 스코틀랜드의 Glasgow에서 태어난 Mark Knopfler는 80년대를 수 놓았던

정상의 그룹 [Dire Straits]의 프런트맨에서 출발하여 영화음악 작곡가로의 변신에

성공한 특별한 경력의 소유자이다.

 

1977년 동생인 David Knopfler와 의기투합, "Dire Straits"를 결성한 그는 록 밴드의

보컬리스트이자, 기타리스트로서 또 상업성으로 얼룩져 있었던 80년대 사회성과

인간성을 이야기했던 지성파 송라이터로서 각광 받는다.

하지만 다이어 스트레이츠가 성공 행진을 거듭하고 있던 순간에도 그룹의 핵심인

마크 노플러는 개인적인 활동에 많은 시간을 할애했다. Bob Dylan, Phil Lynott,

Aztec Camera 등의 앨범에 기타세션으로, 또 프로듀서로 참여하였으며,

83년 「 Local Hero 」를 시작으로 영화 음악에 뛰어든다.

 

다이어 스트레이츠는 동료 뮤지션들이 함께 작업하고픈 기타리스트로도 유명하다.

80년대 이후 다양한 뮤지션들과 호흡을 맞추며, Tina Turner, Steely Dan, Sting,

Thin Lizzy, 지난 2000년 Rod Stewart의 앨범에 이르기까지 그가

기타리스트로서, 프로듀서로서 참여한 앨범은 무궁무진하다.

96년 마크 노플러는 록뮤지션으로서의 솔로 데뷔 앨범 「 Golden Hearts 」를 발표하고

Dire Straits의 해체를 선언한다. 그룹을 유지하면서 많은 외도를 거쳤던 그이지만

솔로 앨범은 다이어 스트레이츠 당시의 음악으로 돌아가듯 컨트리, 포크, 록의 다양한

스타일을 포섭하며 록뮤지션으로서의 능력을 과시한다.
