Ever Since The World Began / Survivor

 

 

 

80년대 미국에서 황금기를 누렸던 수 많은 팝록 밴드들 중에서도 수준높은

멜로디를 담고 있음에도 불구하고 영화주제가 외엔 크게 대중적인 인기를

누리지 못했던 불행한 그룹 Survivor.

 

1978년 기타리스트 Jim Peterik과 Frankie Sullivan은 리쿠르트를 통해

모집한 보컬 Dave Bickler와 그룹 서바이버를 결성하고, 셀프 타이틀의

데뷔 앨범을 발표한다.

첫 싱글 'Somewhere In America'가 차트에 등장하면서 주목을 받게 된

이들은 81년 Marc Doubray(드럼)와 Stephen Ellis(베이스)를 영입해

5인조로 라인업을 구성 본격적인 활동에 들어간다.

음악적으로 그룹 Styx, Journey와 종종 비교되곤 했지만 상업적인 성공과

명성은 미치지 못했던 서바이버에게도 짧지만 영광된 순간은 있었다.

우연한 기회에 자신의 영화 [록키III]의 주제가를 부를 록밴드를 찾던

Sylvester Stallone의 의뢰를 받게 된 서바이버는

'Eye Of The Tiger' ('82)를 선보이게 된다.

 

 

 

오프닝 부분의 화려한 riff, 강한 드럼 비트, 격정적인 코러스가 돋보이는

이 싱글은 전 세계적으로 넘버원을 기록하며 빌보드 차트에 6주 동안 머물렀고,

동명의 앨범을 US, UK 앨범 차트 2위, 12위에 등극시키며 백만 장 이상의

앨범 판매고를 기록했다. 이 여세를 몰아 83년 [Caught in the Game,83]을

발매한 서바이버는 프랭키 설리반의 기타사운드를 내세워

더욱 더 강한 사운드를 들려주었다.

 

그러나 보컬을 맡았던 데이브 비클러가 건강상의 이유로 그룹을 탈퇴하고

이전 Cobra의 보컬리스트인 Jimi Jamison이 가담하면서 밴드의 음악에

소울풀한 분위기를 불어넣게 되는데, 그 결과 [Vital Signs,85]는

빌보드 앨범 차트에 16위로 6개월이나 상주하는 기록을 세우는

한편 'High on You', 'The Search Is Over' 를 톱 텐 히트시켰다.

 

86년 [로키 IV]의 주제곡 'Burning Heart'로 다시 한번 국제적인

명성을 되찾게 된 서바이버는 3년의 기다림 후에 87년에 앨범

[When Seconds Count,87]를 공개한다.

여기서 싱글 커트된 'Is this love (9위)'와 'How much love (51위)'는

이들의 마지막 싱글 히트곡이 되었고, 원년 멤버였던 프랭키 설리번,

짐 페트릭과 신입 멤버 지미 재미슨으로 축소된 라인업으로

[Too Hot To Sleep,88]를 마지막으로 1989년 밴드의 공식 해산을 발표했다.

비록 이 앨범은 상업적으로 큰 성공을 거두지는 못했지만,

서바이버 최고의 작품으로 꼽히고 있다.
