이 곡은 싱어 송 라이터 Kris Kristofferson이 70년에 작사,작곡한 노래다.

그는 영화배우로서도 이름을 드날렸던 만능 엔터테이너이기도 했으며

영화 "A Star Is Born"에서 Barbra Streisand와 함께 출연하기도 했었고,

이 노래는 원래 그의 데뷔앨범 [Kris Kristofferson]에 수록되어 있던 곡이다.

이것을 컨트리 여가수인 Sammi Smith가 불러서 이듬해인 71년에 빌보드
Top10까지 올려놓았고, 컨트리 차트에서는 1위를 차지했다고도 한다.
1971년 Sammi Smith가, 그리고 1972년에 Gladys Knight & The Pips가 
다시 불렀으며,약 250명의 뮤지션들이 리메이크한 것으로도 유명하다. 

 

미국 음악계에서 컨트리가 주도적인 역활을 담당하지 못하던 70년대 초기에 등장한 

크리스 크리스토퍼슨은 내쉬빌 컨트리와 웨스턴 사운드를 대중화시켰던 뮤지션이다.

켄사스주 브론스빌에서 태어난 그는 대학에서 문예창작을 공부하며 작곡을 부업으로

시작한 것이 계기가 되어 인생항로의 큰 변화를 갖게 되었다.
70년초에 컨트리 3대 히트곡 "For the good times" 를 비롯하여

"Sunday morning comin' down",과" Help me make it through the night" 을

작곡하여 그의 이름을 널리 알렸다.
