Melanie Safka로 잘 알려진 여성 포크싱어인 Melanie는
어려서부터 음악에 뛰어난 재능을 보였습니다.

성장하면서 그녀는 밥 딜런과 피트의 영향을 받습니다.
음악 뿐만 아니라 연극에도 흥미를 가져 연극공부도 합니다.
이러한 계기로 남편인 피터 세커릭을 만나게 되었고,
1969년에 그녀는 부다 레코드사와 계약하여 'Born To be' 라는
데뷔 앨범을 발표합니다.

1972년에 그녀는 남편과 함께 [Neighborhood]라는 음반사를
설립하였고 1975년까지 계속 음반을 발표합니다.
그녀의 대표작으로는 지금도 사랑받는 'The Saddest Thing',
'Lay down', 'Ruby Tuesday', 'Brand New Key' 등이 있는데,

 

1971년 롤링 스톤즈의 'Ruby Tuesday', 자작곡인 'What Have They Done To My Song, Ma?' 등으로 영국 시장에서 인기를 얻지만 미국 시장에서는 그리 성공적인 결과를 얻어내지는 못합니다.   

 

 

 그 후 그녀는 피터 셰커릭과 함께 자신의 레이블를 설립하고 여기서 낸 첫 싱글 'Brand New Key'가 미국 차트 정상을 차지하고, 앨범 [Gather Me]는 15위까지 오르며 전성기를 구가하게 되지만, [Garden In The City] 이후 내놓은 일련의 앨범이 실패를 거듭하고 사실상 전성기는 막을 내리게 됩니다.   한때는 금지곡이기도 했던 [Rain Dance]는 국내 매니아들 사이에서  엄청난 사랑을 받아온 멜라니 사프카의  명곡 중의 하나입니다.  수려한 멜로디의 흐름 위에 얹혀져 흐르는 현악 파트의 아름다움과 가식없이 보여주는 그녀의 보컬, 그리고 다양한 악기들의 균형감  있는 배합  등은 이곡이 그녀의 많은 곡들 가운데서도 단연코 최고의 명곡임을 여실히 입증하고 있습니다.  특히, 음정의 고조와 함께 감성의 파장을 일으키는 그녀의 보컬은 정말 탁월하며, 그러한 미적인 감수성과 정교한 음감  속에 창조된 이곡은 포크의 미학을 보여 주는 진정 몇 안되는 최상의 곡이라 할 수 있습니다.
